Beyond the Lens
In the beginning loose sketches of vessels began to metamorphose; organic shapes and lines began to suggest character and expression. Further sketches suggested posture and a figurative form. A departation from the unintentional ‘Metamorphosis of a Pot’ developed consciously towards figurative sculpture, using ceramics as a medium in combination with welded and inserted steel.
Inspired by archaeology, history and the fundamental aspects of ancient culture, ‘Beyond The Lens’ is a title given to a series of works that represent ‘things out of time’ – objects used by a lost civilization; idols and statues once worshipped and devices used for seeing and communication.
‘A collector of rare objects finds himself in an old curiousity shop. He happens across an unusual object – an ancient ‘Lens Device’ – it’s form and lineaments are based in history but it retains certain aspects unfamiliar to him.’ The ‘Viewing Machine’ conveys the concept of utilizing forgotten technology; the combination of ancient and modern aesthetics – observation and communication across time.
